Manitoba Envirothon
An environmental education competition supported by Oak Hammock Marsh Interpretive Centre
Oak Hammock Marsh Interpretive Centre annually supports the Manitoba Envirothon. This Olympic-style event encourages hands-on learning about the environment for high school students, and Oak Hammock Marsh is a perfect place to witness the role our wetlands play in a healthy environment!
Envirothon teams are made up of five high-school students and one advisor (usually a teacher). Students study and prepare for the competition. Topics include: wildlife, aquatics, forestry, soils, and current issues that effect our environment. Professionals who are involved in the five environmental issues are available to speak to students, giving them a better understanding of today’s complex decision-making regulations and their implications for our environment.
Participants learn to use critical thinking and problem solving skills and gain valuable experience and insight into environment-related careers. Winning teams will get the chance to participate in the international Envirothon competition. The community also benefits from Envirothon. Today’s youth will be tomorrow’s property owners, government officials, parents and teachers. The future of our planet depends on the students of today!
The Interpretive Centre hosted a variety of Envirothon activities when the international competition came to the Winnipeg area in July 2006.
