What's new at Oak Hammock Marsh Interpretive Centre?
Test your Sleuthing Skills with a High-Tech Scavenger Hunt!
Geocaching at Oak Hammock Marsh is a fun family activity involving the use of a GPS unit to find caches or treasure boxes hidden throughout the Wildlife Managed Area (WMA).
Geocaching is an entertaining adventure game for users of Global Positioning System receivers (GPS). The basic idea is to have caches (or hidden items) set up all over the world and share the locations of these caches on the Internet. GPS users can then use location coordinates to find the caches. Once found, a cache may provide the visitor with a wide variety of rewards. All the visitors are asked to do is to sign their names in the logbook along with the date and time they found it and if they take something from the cache, they should leave something of equal or greater value for the next person.
There are 15 geocaches waiting to be found at Oak Hammock Marsh. Some caches are easy to get to, even for families with strollers, while some are much harder and will require a good hike or even a canoe!
Maps and coordinates are available at the front reception desk and GPS receivers can be rented for the day for only $20.00 (deposit required).
